Calvin College Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex Completed

Installing and finishing one of the largest Olympic competition swimming pools in the United States requires expertise in substrate preparation, and a keen sense of the tile installation design created by GMB Architects.  Welch Tile and Marble, in collaboration with The Christman Company met the challenge of a compressed completion schedule, completing the project in 8 weeks, vs. the 16 weeks forecasted.  The gutter design of this pool is truly "state of the art".  This design affords faster overall times, and greater parity between outside and center lanes.  Further, the aeration system employed in the diving well produces softer entries for the divers.  The specified tile system and design called for porcelain 1"x1" tiles.  The pool itself required over 2,700,000 tiles and the deck another 1,300,000.  Over 4,000,000 individual tiles were installed in just 8 weeks. The Spoelhof Field House and pool is the single largest expansion project in Calvin College history, adding approximately 10% to the overall campus.  Welch Tile is proud to have been a part of this historic project.

Finished work for JW Marriott

Posted by: Welch Tile & Marble | Jul, 24th

Project: JW Marriott

This luxury hotel has a distinct architectural design that graces the Grand Rapids skyline and provides guests with an experience like none other in the Midwest. Its 337 rooms and 660-space parking structure support events at such venues as DeVos Place and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The hotel created 250 new service industry jobs and the 110,000 sq. ft. convention center is projected to generate $15 to $20 million of revenue for the community annually. A study in efficiency, an average of 186 people worked 17 hours a day, seven days a week for 24 months. Shipments of materials were delivered at night to minimize disruption to nearby businesses and neighboring Amway Grand Plaza Hotel guests as well as reduce the need for road and lane closures. Amassing knowledge as they went, Rockford’s crew tightened the schedule by installing one floor every five days, finally reaching the 23rd story and helipad at a height of 256 feet. Budget $97,000,000. Supervision Mike VanGessel, Mike Gnewkowski.

Project: The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is the largest community theatre in Grand Rapids and one of the largest and oldest in the entire United States. Before the The building, originally constructed in 1905 had cramped lobbies, limited access and outdated building systems. Working with Tower Pinkster Architects, Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. revived the theatre's original grandeur and infrastructure while re-organizing it for greater efficiency, accessibility and safety.Focusing on patron amenities, a three-story atrium along the north façade provides much needed reception space, restrooms and balcony seating. The complex consists of four distinct historic buildings that are connected internally for use by the Theatre and School of Theatre Arts. This space contains approximately 76,500 square feet of floor area and six floors. The wall structures retain significant historic character and value for the community. The following renovations have taken place in an effort to reorganize building circulation, increase patron amenities and safety, and restore the building facade while preserving historic integrity: Restored theatre interior - historic (decorative) paint.  Refurbished seating  Re-raked balcony tiers for greater comfort New North Lobby with transparent glass facade and two grand staircases New West Lobby and entrance New restroom, coat and concession facilities New dressing rooms, green room and backstage connection Upgraded building mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems  New lighting instruments and control system New corner tower anchoring Division St. and Library St. The revitalized vibrant theatre has reclaimed its “corner tower” prominence in connecting this historic neighborhood to the city’s downtown area.
