Grand Rapids Community College - Parking & Playground Facility

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Civil-Engineering

Story

When Grand Rapids Community College identified a need for an additional park on their campus, various conceptual layouts of surface parking lots and parking structures were performed. It was decided to relocate the existing play ground facility, in conjunction with the construction of an environmentally sensitive 122 space student parking facility, to meet their needs at the campus in the City of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Driesenga and Associates provided site development services including surveying, site and stormwater design, landscape architecture, construction staking, construction management and construction materials testing services. With stormwater management being an important concern for both the City of Grand Rapids and the College, it was decided to utilize porous asphalt pavement system to effectively treat and detain stormwater prior to a controlled discharge to the City’s system. Additional site considerations for the parking facility included; severe grade across the site, preserving existing significant trees, provide parking for 122 spaces on this downtown site and designing the stormwater system for future considerations of a rain garden.
