Albion College Science Complex

Albion, Michigan

Civil-Engineering

Story

Albion College, in an effort to remain competitive in the sciences and to become a model for the “sustainable” or “green” design, undertook the new construction of a four story classroom and laboratory facility, a 7,000 sq. ft. atrium, a greenhouse and clock tower, as well as the renovation of three halls. The renovation includes connecting all science departments into one complex. Driesenga & Associates, Inc. furnished complete survey, geotechnical and site civil engineering design for the renovations and additions to the 60,030 sq. ft. Albion College Science Complex. This project focused on obtaining LEED Certification for storm water management. The project utilized porous pavements, rain gardens, vegetative swales and detention ponds, underground storm water detention and green roofs. Design also included a storm water lift station to prevent flooding of the lower levels of the building. Proposed and existing underground utility coordination was completed with two architectural firms.
