South Christian High School :: A Classroom Transformation

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Construction-Management

Story

This transformation of a multi-classroom environment was designed to create learn laboratories from outdated classrooms. Four classrooms were transformed to create four distinct learning environments.  Since today’s teaching and learning styles are more active and more collaborative.

Teachers instructing different subjects have an opportunity to rotate through each of the classrooms in order to weigh in on what components work best for their specific subject. The project involved demolition of existing classrooms and an upgrade of furniture and technology:

  • Audio visual system upgrade
  • Steelcase educational furniture
  • Resilient, high traffic flooring
  • Vibrant accent wall colors

Chromebook laptops were obtained for students through a gift-in kind program. The transformed classrooms utilize lectures, group work and individual work, with the ability to rearrange fast, sometimes even during the same class period. That calls for furniture that’s adaptable and flexible, and can move easily at a moment’s notice.

On going master plan: The existing high school had undergone multiple additions over the years with the last one completed in 1995.  The DVCC project team is working with AMDG Architecture on a master plan which involves updating the technology and testing flexible learning spaces for its 21st century students.
