Rockford Reformed Church

Rockford, Michigan

Story

The Family Life Center is a 2-level multi-purpose facility with 10,000 square feet on the main floor and 6,000 square feet on a mezzanine level. It consists of a middle school-sized gymnasium, a 30’X50’ youth room, new commercial kitchen, nursery facilities, a music room, and seven new classrooms.

Using a Design/Build approach, Wolverine Building constructed the facility of pre-engineered steel with split-face block exterior walls and a painted architectural metal roof.

To revitalize the church’s tired facade, Wolverine Building re-faced the façade of the existing church and modified the roofline to make it blend naturally with the features and roof of the new structure. The windows, entrances, and other architectural features on the existing church were also re-worked to match details used in the construction of the Family Life Center.

Another goal of the project was to capitalize on the church’s prominent location as it sits on the top of a hill along Northland Drive in Rockford.

In the end, the project was completed nearly two months prior to the end date desired by Rockford Reformed and at a price that was $2 less per square foot than the original budget pricing discussed. Wolverine attributes these results to value engineering techniques and the use of a collaborative environment in which their team worked with members of the congregation who volunteered for certain aspects of the project.
