Martha's Vineyard

Grand Rapids, Michigan

General-Contractor-Design/Build

Story

At the edge of the historic district of Heritage Hill on Union Avenue is Martha's Vineyard. The owner recently bought a late 1800's building adjacent to it and hired Wolverine Building to merge the two buildings. The project was completed using a design/build approach.

To allow for the removal of brick, Wolverine pinned the walls between the two structures with a cantilevered system and took out three areas of the wall to combine the interiors. Steel columns were added for support of the roof of one building and the upper floor of the other building. Then, using salvaged brick from the removed walls, three flat arches were constructed over the new column enclosures, enhancing the openings. The newly remodeled interior is light and airy with oak flooring throughout both buildings to tie the spaces together.
