Spectrum Health: Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion

Grand Rapids, Michigan

steel-erection

Story

Total Cost: $1,200,000

Supervision: Doug Sparling, Project Manager

This challenging project, located on Michigan Hill, was erected by Pioneer Construction for the Christman Company. With careful planning and logistics control, 2,200 tons of steel was brought to the site and raised into place. With no room for staging, detailed sequencing plans were developed. The use of a 110 ton crawler crane and the tower crane made for an ease of construction. The geometry presented challenges as well. The radius (convex) Michigan Street elevation was extremely detailed with canilevers, rolled pourstop, and curtianwall supports. Another notable feature includes the 630 tons of 1” plate steel that was placed with magnetic rigging to cover the linear accelerator. This difficult erection project was executed and detailed in 4 months.

2008 ABC Construction Award Winner for Structural Steel Erection.
