Story

The St. Peter’s Cemetery Chapel, Mausoleum structure includes 760 crypts, 80 niches and a new chapel.  Initially, Mekus Tanager completed a master plan for the complex that allows for phased expansion as the cemetery’s needs increase.  The resulting design complements the adjacent columbarium and administrative office.

The program requirements for this project posed some firsts for St. Peter’s, as the chapel and mausoleum are the first above ground structures for the cemetery.  It was important that there were a variety of choices available for the cemetery’s clients both inside and outside of the structure.

Mekus Tanagers’ solution was to create three buildings that accommodate crypts inside and out with a chapel focus towards the existing cemetery.  The clear glass that surrounds the interior crypts creates a sense of light and airiness in the chapel.  The granite, which is from China and Brazil, highlights the fronts against the neutral backdrop of the brick walls.
