Story

Mt. Sinai Cemetery is a traditional “Jewish Cemetery that cares about the Jewish Community.” Mekus Tanager was retained to investigate opportunities to expand burial options, incorporate future mausoleums and a funeral home, and enhance the inherent beauty of the site.

The Master Plan embraces the Phoenix desert landscape and distant mountain views. Canopy trees provide shade and reduce the visibility of overhead electric lines that cross the site. Sustainable features include preserving the natural stormwater wash that bisects the site and the native saguaro cactus, despite multiple utility easements. Accessibility is fostered by making all graves sidewalk accessible and connecting the cemetery to the adjacent bike path. The plan also enhances Jewish burial traditions, offering significant ground burial and orienting all graves to face east.

Of the 32 acre site, 4 acres are developed leaving significant room for growth. Working in close collaboration with Mt. Sinai, the Master Plan successfully integrates a variety of inventory options, optimizing land utilization and marketability for the future. The phasing plan is designed to be self-sufficient, balancing development costs with revenue. Currently, a new Phase I cremation garden is under construction.
