Ascension Cemetery :: Libertyville, Illinois

Story

Stemming from a need for additional above ground burial inventory, the new garden crypt complex at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Illinois, was conceived as a variation on a theme, reflecting on the design of three adjacent existing garden crypt buildings.  The last in a series of four buildings, the new complex was configured as a circle within a square -- with half of the square missing to reveal the circle within.  This configuration was inspired by the geometric layouts of the existing adjacent buildings.  The site also played a large role in the design of the new building, given that the structure would be bounded by a new roadway curving around its circular side.  In effect, the curve of the building reflects the arc of the adjacent roadway.
