Westside Community YMCA

Architectural

Story

The YMCA of Lansing and MAYOTTEgroup Architects have enjoyed a long term relationship spanning more than a decade in the pursuit and study of options for expansion of their network of branch facilities and replacement of their aging downtown Lansing facility. These efforts culminated in the design and construction of the Westside Community YMCA, their largest and most comprehensive area facility that serves as both a replacement facility for the downtown branch and a new facility accessible to the residents of the Westside of Lansing. An adaptive reuse of a former inline skating facility, the new 71,000 s.f. YMCA features an open floor plan with dramatic interplay of space, volume, and color. The challenge of meeting the requirements of the YMCA within the limitations of an extremely aggressive fixed budget and time frame is a particular point of pride for MAYOTTEgroup Architects. The facility includes an aquatics center, fitness and indoor track area, aerobic and dance studios, climbing wall, racquetball courts, full size gymnasium, indoor inline skating rink and skateboard area, as well as spaces for youth of all ages, locker rooms with steam and sauna rooms, meeting, office, and support areas.
