St. John Student Parish

East Lansing, Michigan

Architectural

Story

The renovation of existing downtown church was undertaken to meet the diverse needs of the Catholic students, faculty, staff and their families at the University. The traditional, longitudinal church plan was reorganized with a central sanctuary designed to encourage gathering around the altar. The surrounding worship space was designed to accommodate 760 people in fixed pews. The former sanctuary at the far end of the building now serves as a small chapel used for weekend liturgies and small groups. Chairs have been provided in this space to allow for a variety of layouts. Separated from this area by softly translucent, moveable screens is the eucharistic reservation chapel and the tabernacle. The finishes were revitalized with light woods, off-white walls and ceiling, and pale terrazzo tile floor.
