Martinez+Johnson Architecture led a program initiative for the University of Mary Washington to renovate and update three on campus performance facilities located in two separate buildings. 

M+J  was first hired by the university in order to refine, clarify, and define the project description, data, and requirements for modernizing their on-campus performance facilities: The Dodd Auditorium, built in 1938, which is host to various events open to the public as well as the population of the University and seats 1,300; c1950 Klein Theatre which serves as the primary theater for student theater performances and seats 295; and Studio 115 a flexible black box theatre that seats approximately 40 and is used for student and classroom performances. 

The scope of work then progressed through construction documentation and administration and was performed under “design not to exceed” construction cost.

M+J worked closely with the theatre and dance departments to develop improvements to these facilities, including new seats, finishes, draperies, natural lighting controls, a new tension grid, theatrical systems and room lighting, stage rigging, projection, AV and sound systems, backstage improvements, associated improvements to electrical and mechanical systems and incorporated life safety, accessibility, and building code remedies.
