The Durant :: The Durant Hotel Historic Renovation

Flint, Michigan

Concrete-Contractor

Story

Named for William C. Durant, founder of General Motors, The Durant Hotel was built in 1920. The hotel was central to the most prominent events in the history of Flint, Michigan during the early years of the automobile. The Durant was closed in 1972 and remained empty for over 34 years. Renovation of the building was completed in 2010 and is now home to retail business on the ground floor and student housing on floors three through eight.

The General Contractor for the extensive renovation, Wolverine Building Group, contracted with Kent Companies to pour a ¾” nominal thickness Gyp-Crete 2000/3.2K gypsum cement based underlayment.  The new underlayment was installed on floors three through eight to level the existing cast in place concrete slabs to allow for installation of new finish floor goods, including tile, large ceramic tile, and carpet.

The efficient installation and fast cure time of the Kent’s underlayment, which was pumped from ground level to the individual floors, helped to keep this project on schedule.  Because of this, the other trades on the project were allowed to work on the newly placed underlayment the next day after it was poured.
