The Boardwalk

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Concrete-Contractor

Story

The Boardwalk project marks the transformation of a 1892 furniture manufacturing building into modern, stylish living space.  The Boardwalk, which is located along the Grand River on Monroe Avenue, was originally the site of the largest furniture factory in the world: Berkley and Gay.  It was constructed in 1892 and saw major additions in 1912 and 1921.  Eventually, the furniture business fizzled, and the building closed its doors.  The factory stood empty in 1954.

Nearly 50 years later, Kent Companies supported the 2-year, $35million effort to revitalize the historic building into modern condos and office space.  Kent Companies installed nearly 500,000 square feet of floor leveling underlayments with Maxxon's Gypcrete products to smooth and level the old hardwood floors.

Today, the Boardwalk is home to many students and professionals from the downtown universities as well as the hospitals.  The Boardwalk won the Governor's Historic Preservation Award and the Neighborhood Business Award.  It was also featured in the book, "Buildings of Michigan."
