Spectrum Health Elevator Shaft Expansion

Demolition

Story

Patient care is first priority at Spectrum Health, a 1,938-bed not-for-profit health care system in West Michigan.  Spectrum Health operates 10 hospitals and 130 ambulatory and service sites including the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and the largest adult open heart program in the state of Michigan.  Elevating the standard of care called for the expansion of a 5-story elevator shaft.

Kent Companies provided demolition services to expand the elevator shaft from a 7’x7’ space to an 8’x11’ space in order to accommodate patient gurneys.  The Facilities Services team developed a comprehensive plan to remove wall and flooring segments from each story of the building without disturbing hospital operations.  The elevator shaft was located adjacent to operating rooms, patient rooms and surgeon sleeping quarters.

This project presented challenges in terms of precision, safety and schedule.  The Kent Companies followed a rigorous quality control process to ensure precise measurements were taken on every section of demolition.  The team engineered a rigging system to secure sections of the floor before cutting them loose.  The rigging system allowed for the safe and efficient removal of materials from the towering 5-story elevator shaft.  Kent Companies met hospital protocol for operations by scheduling the use of specific machinery and activities on a non-interruptive basis.  As a result of a safe and detail-driven demolition plan, Kent Companies met schedule demands, allowing the steel contractor to begin elevator construction on time.
