Gaslight Village

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Concrete-Contractor

Story

This unique concrete project is a cast-in-place structure centered on a large structural pedestal, which supports several large elevated concrete slabs.

The three-sided pedestal extends up from a large base pad located in the middle of a decorative pond. The vertical sides vary in dimension while holding a convex shape.  This required very complex and challenging formwork.  It is a structure that could only be constructed with a material as moldable as concrete.

The underside of the structural deck has exposed beam bottoms that create a unique appearance. The beams become integrated into two flights of symmetrically curved cast- in-place stairways while a third beam creates a long, curved handicap assessable ramp.

The entire concrete structure is designed around architectural features such as ponds, fountains, and sculptures, and exposed aggregate paving.

This project truly shows the versatility of cast-in-place concrete and the craftsmanship of Kent Companies.
