Family Wellness Center

Detroit, Michigan

Story

Designed by famed architect Albert Kahn and constructed in 1910, this four story wood framed structure originally served as the San Telmo Cigar Factory in Detroit, Michigan.  Renovation began in April of 2010 to adapt the building for use as a family wellness center serving disadvantaged children and adults from the surrounding neighborhood. In addition to providing medical and dental care the building will also include counseling and mentoring facilities, a child care center, educational services and office spaces.

Converting this old, four story timber framed building into a modern facility was no easy task! Among the many challenges was the fact the old hardwood floors sagged between structural columns by as much as 3 inches. Kent Companies was contracted by O’Brien Construction Company to install Moistop Vapor Barrier, galvanized wire mesh reinforcement, Acousti-Mat® II sound control pad and Gyp-Crete 2000®/3.2K in thicknesses ranging from 1 inch minimum and up to 4 inches in areas to flatten the existing floor. The finished product was a flat, sound conditioned floor with a perfect, smooth surface for installation of new carpet and vinyl tile.
