Project: Noel Residence

Achieving the perfect balance of openness and intimacy…

Situated on two-plus acres, this 3,200 SF Sarasota residence was designed to reflect the Client’s desire for a minimalist home they could equally live in and entertain. The concept of the layout was to create a separation of these functions with architectural elements but to tie the design together with light, form, and repetition. The floor plan reflects these considerations with a distinct delineation between public and private areas. The uncluttered design and palette of simple finishes creates a sense of interior and exterior space that is wide open without ignoring privacy. Further addressing the Client’s request for seclusion, the home intentionally faces away from the busy street and onto an open pool terrace. Through the use of non-traditional building materials the Owner’s request for an energy-efficient home was achieved. The result is a home that has been awarded the Florida Power and Light Gold Star certification for energy efficiency.

Mumford Pool House Finished

Project: Mumford Pool House

This project centered on creating an elegant backyard living space in which the Owners could live and entertain. Both design professionals, they requested a new pool house, pool and landscape layout that embraced modern design and expanded living space.

The main challenge for the Architect was to create a comfortable living space within a compact urban backyard. To achieve this, the unembellished design of the Pool House and patio blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. The interior/exterior flow of space is achieved with the use of eight-foot high disappearing glass doors and unfinished concrete floors continuing onto the exterior patio.  Glass mosaics are used in the shower, the main living space and pool area to continue the aesthetic cohesion between the indoors and outdoors.  LED lights in the pool animate the space, allowing for subtle changes depending on the occasion.  Inside the Pool House, traditional Japanese Shoji screens, glass block, and exposed ventilation merge to create an inviting space with an artistic edge while a door from the shower opens directly to the pool outdoors.  Further increasing functionality, the 625-square-foot Pool House simultaneously serves as a pool house, guest house, home office and hurricane-safe house.

Through the use of detailed design elements and simplicity the modern backyard Pool House and patio extends living space with artistic continuity. The design blurs the lines between inside and out to create a backyard space that effortlessly flows and enhances the way the Owners live and entertain.
