Katai Residence :: Novi, Michigan

Architectural

Story

Katai space is a hybrid intervention of weaving programmatic content through an existing field of residential infrastructure and the interior wrapping of the box itself.  Sited in an existing residential basement, it explores a different paradigm of domestic leisure.  A level of specificity is applied by the programmatic desire to conceive the space as media driven for large scale entertaining.  While elevating the quality of living in a space that is restricted from natural light, it does not deny the obviousness of its location.  Surfaces are utilized for illumination, and a reflective palette serves to maximize the presence of artificial light.

An exploration in digital fabrication of commodity materials allowed for a customization to occur throughout the intervention.  The material medium remained constant while the formal manipulations responded to specific programmatic criteria such as the ensconcing of flat screen panels or the shaping of a door handle into the sliding wall.
