Eiteljorg Museum Renovation

Indianapolis, Indiana

Electrical-Contractor

Story

ERMCO, Inc. provided new lighting, distribution equipment, dimming and lighting control systems, and fire alarm systems, as well as demolition work for the 45,000 square foot Eiteljorg Museum addition. This project increased gallery space in the museum by 50%, added a 6,000 square foot education center, a circular sculpture court that accommodates 300 people, a 90-seat cafe with a catering kitchen, and three acres of gardens and terrace leading down to the Central Canal. This project was awarded Honor in Construction at Monumental Affair.
One part of the project that was a challenge was that the existing utility feed to the building ran right where the new addition was going to be built. Power had to be kept to the museum during construction and a temporary feed had to be put in place until the new utility feed was installed. ERMCO, Inc. also worked with the owner to design custom lighting fixtures for the addition that matched existing lighting in the museum. This was a difficult task because of a lack of information about the original lighting. A third challenge was relocating an existing generator system to a new part of the building.
