M-45 Streetscape

landscape-architecture

Story

Provided design development, construction documents, and project oversight including coordination with MDOT by supplying Inspector Daily Reports (IDRs) for the streetscape enhancements. The project incorporated decorative street lighting, gateway signage, seating areas with site furnishings, curbed planters, and accent pavers, extensive landscaping, and an irrigation system. Work completed by Corey Broersma, RLA, while employed by RJM Design, Inc. Four miles of streetscape enhancements for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Allendale Charter Township funded in part through Gov. John Engler's Build Michigan II plan and TEA-21. The enhancements span west along Lake Michigan Drive (M-45) from the Grand River, past Grand Valley State University, to the edge of Allendale’s commercial district (68th Street). The enhancements are the crown jewel of the massive MDOT reconstruction project that created a safe, beautiful, and usable pedestrian corridor for the increasingly busy community of Allendale, Michigan. Part of the project included landscaped boulevards with a substantial number of trees, shrubs, and perennials to accompany those planted on the outer edges of the road. These plantings reduce the visual width of right of way thereby reducing an atmosphere where motorists feel comfortable driving at higher speeds. These plantings compliment those provided by community merchants and organizations in curbed planters within the pedestrian seating areas along the route. Complete with sturdy decorative benches, matching trash receptacles, and accent pavers, these seating areas provide a great spot to rest during the day or even night given the amount of light provided by the decorative street lights.
