Story

Driesenga & Associates, Inc. provided site design and roadway reconstruction plans for improvements to Bond Avenue and Trowbridge Streets. The documents were prepared in accordance with City of Grand Rapids standards and included full roadway reconstruction, sanitary sewer and water main, and utility modifications. The project also included construction plans for the streetscape amenities consisting of decorative street lighting, parking meters, masonry seatwall planters, accent pavers, and landscaping. Major design and construction challenges included working around an extensive network of aged utilities which needed to remain in service. The Icon on Bond development is an urban renewal project which will transform the site of the former Grand Rapids Foundry into an inviting urban residential neighborhood. The development encompasses two City blocks, and includes two 118 unit residential high rise condominium buildings adjacent to Sixth Street Park. Located at the intersection of Bond Avenue and Trowbridge Street in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. The project includes complete reconstruction of almost 2000 feet of roadway and storm sewer, upgrades to the City sanitary sewer system requiring 1700 feet of 12”, 15” and 18” sanitary sewer, replacement of 8” and 12” watermain, and related streetscape items. To accommodate the 9 story building and associated parking structures, the existing roadways were narrowed, and traffic “bump outs” and on-street parking added to create an urban neighborhood feel. The streetscape and design elements were developed to reflect the North Monroe Avenue District theme.
