Hillsdale College Campus Improvements

Hillsdale, Michigan

Civil-Engineering

Story

In an effort to expand and improve the facilities and aesthetics, Hillsdale College undertook a redevelopment project for their entire North Campus. The improvements included the design and construction of the Grewcock Student Union, the Joseph H Moss Family Laboratory Wing of the Strosacker Science Center, and the Benge Colonnade. The Grewcock Student Union is a 52,000 square foot multi-story facility design housing the college cafeteria and other student activities. The Joseph H Moss Family Laboratory Wing, a 17,200 square foot addition, increases the research and teaching spaces for the biology, chemistry and anatomy programs. The Benge Colonnade provides a protected pedestrian linkage from the existing library to the Grewcock Student Union. Uniting each of the structural improvements together was the redevelopment of the open lawn quadrangle that is a central link through the North Campus. Driesenga and Associates, Inc. provided civil engineering design including full site improvements such as storm water management, site layout and grading, and public utility extensions. Project challenges included working with the architect to develop an alternate design that provided an entry point and integrated drop off at the north end of the campus by re-working an existing parking lot. Through construction, D&A provided construction layout and materials testing and inspections services for the project.
