The Toasted Pickle is a design-build project involving a build-out of a restaurant in Grand Haven, Michigan. The goal of the restaurant owner is to create a unique sandwich shop with a local farm to table flair. Dan Vos Construction teamed with Interior designer Amanda Huizinga to create a turn of the century industrial look.
The main walls are the original building brick that the owner exposed from under a coat of plaster which she painted a tribute to her father, nicknamed Zeke, and his pickles. The ceiling treatment includes timber framing, corrugated metal sheets and several types of unique light fixtures.
The Toasted Pickle seats 46 guests in a variety of built seating options ranging from tables to booths, bar height counter tops, and alcoves. A walk-up ice cream window offers walk-up street service.
The turn of the 20th-century building and small space presented both challenges as well as opportunities to upgrade the functionality and utilities of this commercial space to meet today’s standards while maintaining a separation from the apartments above.
The kitchen flooring was reinforced and new material was introduced to accommodate state of the art kitchen equipment and cooling system.
The existing wood flooring was refinished. Wood reclaimed from the old Grand Haven Tannery was used to create shelving and counter tops. The wood tops were burned with etchings that reflect the story of the owner’s family.
The overall design of The Toasted Pickle creates a fun environment that will make the Toasted Pickle a special dining venue for visitors to Grand Haven.
