St. Sebastian Church

Byron Center, Michigan

Architectural

Story

This rapidly growing rural parish community had outgrown their beloved historic 100 year old church.  Cox Medendorp Olson was asked to help the parishioners to master plan their existing site and design a new worship facility.  This new building seats 500 people in its first phase, and is master planned for an additional 500 seats in future additions.  This unique design has a rural appeal, alluding to agricultural buildings, and integrates a contemporary structure onto a traditional cruciform pattern.  This plan allows the structure to be easily expanded to accommodate future growth.  Chairs in lieu of pews in the worship space allows flexibility for the space to accommodate various types of services throughout the year.  This project was an ABC of Western Michigan Award of Excellence Winner.
