St. Catherine of Siena Church - Phase 2

Portage, Michigan

Architectural

Story

The initial phase of this project was to assist the Parish in the development of a long range Master Plan and spatial use analysis of every building and service at this site.

The Church, rectory, and youth center were all reviewed and a budget was established for the various components of the Master Plan so the work could be prioritized and undertaken in a scheduled manner.  The budget process, along with graphic materials depicting the scope of work, assisted in the fund-raising campaign.

The Master Plan consisted of an enlarged and updated church building, an enlarged youth facility (Stanley Centre), new church offices and service center.

Phase Two was a major renovation and addition to the existing Church and served to enlarge the Sanctuary to seat 1000 peole along with providing new offices and parish service areas.  Acoustical considerations were an important design consideration, as was finding a way to expand upon the strong architecture of the existing Sanctuary in a manner that created a new space that had a fresh and unified character.

One component of the Sanctuary project was the 3-D modeling of the building which allowed parishioners to get realistic impressions of the conceptual spaces they were raising funds for.  This also allowed accurate views to be created that aided in designing the liturgical appointments.
