Sushi Ya Restaurant :: New Restaurant located in an Existing Space

Kalamazoo, Michigan

Engineering

Story

Design Program:   Create a one-of-kind atmosphere that is sophisticated, friendly, inviting, and     upbeat with an Asian Fusion vibe incorporating the landlord's desire to have the building's historic   building structural system remain exposed. The design program included creating intimate small group seating areas, traditional tatami rooms, cooking demonstration area, a suyshi bar, and flexible open seating.

Design Challenges:  Integrating the very personal design desires of the restaurant owner with the strict requirements of the building owner within a tight budget was the foremost design challenge. The space was build-out on the First Floor of an existing building therefore, the kitchen hood exhaust system design called for the installation to be sensitive to the future occupancy of the Second Floor. Coordination of the kitchen equipment, code, and structural issues for the development of a restaurant all challenged the design team since, this was not pre-planned for in the  original building development plans.

Scope of Engineering Services:  Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical
