Kalamazoo Transportation Center

Kalamazoo, Michigan

Metal-Wall-&-Roof-Panels

Story

The newly-renovated transit center located within the heart of Kalamazoo’s historic district, is a shining example of contemporary needs combined with old world craftsmanship.  The new 20 bay canopied bus shelter is comprised of nearly 25,000 SF of 7mm Preweathered Rheinzink double lock standing seam roof panels and custom fabricated cornice materials furnished and installed by Architectural Glass and Metals, Inc.

AGM worked closely with the design and construction team to develop a schedule-sensitive fabrication and installation sequence tolerant of the limitations of natural zinc materials.  Due to the formability limitations of natural zinc in temperatures below 40 degrees, AGM engineered a plan to procure 100% of the raw materials well in advance of the scheduled completion date, allowing our field crews to immediately initiate custom on-site roll forming of the roof panels once weather conditions permitted.  Implementation of this installation strategy allowed AGM the ability to achieve critical completion dates essential to the success of the overall project.

In addition to the custom formed standing seam metal roofing, the newly modernized facility incorporates a custom fabricated, single-piece, cornice element fabricated from matching Preweathered Rheinzink materials by AGM in conjunction with Old World Roofing.  The design of the cornice was developed to be respectful of the rich architectural detailing featured in the original 1887 structure.
