Process Piping

Story

Project Polk was started in the summer of 2014. The original contract amount started at $6,000,000. By the time we reached fall the contract had ballooned to $9,000,000. Another major challenge for this project was the schedule was not extended for the additional work but, was shortened by 6 months. To help meet the tight schedule deadline we focused on prefabrication. The project was never a BIM job. Recognizing that we needed to prefabricate to meet the tight schedule, we used laser scanning to model the existing building to produce a BIM model to fabricate from. Most of the work was done in an operating dairy facility requiring GMP. The work consisted of a new boiler plant, new chiller plant, new utilities and process lines to equipment. In one year 65,000 feet of utility and process piping was installed and 80,000 man hours used. The use of BIM allowed us to meet the tight deadline by moving the work into a controlled environment in our shop.
