Story

Landfill Leachate Containing VOCs, BNAs, and Phenolic Southwest, USA AQUAMENDâ„¢ performance has been validated on landfill leachate containing a wide variety of volatile organics, base neutral acid extractable (BNA) compounds, and phenolics. The target compounds included methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), and acetone. These compounds have traditionally been difficult or expensive to remove from wastewater using existing treatment methods. Concentrations of MEK, MIBK and Acetone were found to be approximately 53,400, 35,500 and 4,680 ug/L, respectively. Concentrations of phenolic compounds totalled approximately 103,000 ug/L. The AQUAMEND treatment system successfully treated the phenolic compounds to approximately 29 ug/L. The AQUAMEND treatment system successfully treated each of the target compounds to below the detection limit of 2 ug/L. The AQUAMEND treatment system can be easily placed in series with other treatment options to treat inorganics, such as metals. In this project, it was necessary to treat the effluent for the presence of inorganics as a second stage of treatment due to the presence of arsenic and other metals in significant quantities. Graph Shows the Influence of AQUAMEND treatment on concentrations of organic compounds in landfill leachate.
