First Companies helped Dermatology Associates of West Michigan (DAWM) secure land, design, and construct their new, class-A, 48,000 SF medical facility along the East Paris Medical Corridor.

Positioned on 3.76 acres, DAWM’s staff and patients enjoy the convenience and safety of a well-lit campus with snow-melt sidewalks and ample parking (approximately 300 spaces surround the building). The practice’s location along the East Paris Medical Corridor gives patients easy access to DAWM’s services as well as many other doctors and medical service providers located in the area.

DAWM’s eye-catching exterior blends a variety of colored metal panels with precast concrete, vibrantly stained wood accents, and large glass windows into a sleek, modern, approachable facility that reflects the practice’s brand. A large, covered canopy sits above the drop-off area in front of the main entrance to protect patients from the elements as they enter the building.

Patients enter a spacious reception area just inside the main entrance on the ground level. As they arrive, they are greeted by office receptionists working at an impressive, custom-built desk that nearly spans the width of the building. This sweeping desk is large enough to seat eleven receptionists, and features a custom tile front, solid-surface countertops, and decorative acrylic dividers to ensure patient safety and privacy. Directly across from the main reception desk are several self-check-in stations for those who prefer a lower contact visit, as well as restrooms for patients and staff.

Each waiting area is a part of a “pod” that is assigned to each of the practicing physicians and offers patients a more efficient and personal experience. Waiting areas include comfortable seating and an abundance of natural light for patients to enjoy prior to their appointments.

Though the space is organized using distinct pods, every area has multiple access points – either by joint hallways or card-accessible doors – making it easy for staff to travel throughout the building.

Beyond the lobby of the Skin Renewal Centre are four spa treatment rooms, two laser treatment rooms, a private consultation office, and staff workstations. The treatment rooms include blackout window shades for patient privacy, adjustable lighting, and a calming color palette to encourage relaxation.

For patient enjoyment, this facility includes two large fish tanks in the Mohs waiting rooms. Installation of these tanks required an outside expert to ensure they were fully operable and easily maintained while also blending well with the aesthetic of the surrounding space. These waiting rooms also offer private restrooms, complimentary beverage stations, and comfortable seating for those with extended stays.

With efficiency and service excellence in mind, DAWM included a sterilization room and general testing lab in their building design. By bringing these services in-house, DAWM saves money and, more importantly, time. They now have the tools and quick results they need right at their fingertips, enabling them to serve their patients better.

Design excellence remained consistent throughout the space, including the basement where administrative support staff work. This space includes a sterilization center, laundry facilities, locker rooms, private offices, a mother’s lounge, an executive conference room, a multipurpose breakroom, and restrooms.

To ensure a quality work environment, despite being below ground level, retaining walls were built around the exterior of the building to be able to incorporate large windows throughout the basement that bring in natural light. The retaining walls were designed to serve a dual purpose. In the spring and summer months, these are transformed into “Live Walls” where greenery and colorful flowers further bring the outdoors into the space.

A mother’s lounge is well-equipped to provide the privacy and support nursing mothers require. This lounge is located in the basement and includes adjustable lighting, comfortable seating, and a small refrigerator for milk storage.

A large, dividable, multipurpose room sits in the center of the basement and serves as a breakroom for the team, as well as a place for vendor presentations, training workshops, full team gatherings, etc. Additional, unused space was incorporated into the design for future growth.

The large, executive conference room incorporates state-of-the-art technology, and is complete with high-end, modern furniture, an acoustical ceiling, and beverage station – making it the ideal space for business meetings, strategic leadership discussions, and more.
